RRFBs are user-activated amber LEDs that supplement warning signs at uncontrolled crosswalks or mid-block crosswalks. They are activated by pedestrians using a push button. RRFBs use an irregular flash pattern that is similar to emergency flashers on police vehicles or a flashing strobe. They warn drivers when pedestrians are using the crosswalk. The RRFBs are also equipped with audible pedestrian pushbuttons with an audio message such as “Flashing lights are activated. Vehicle may not stop. Please proceed with caution.” RRFBs are a warning device only. Pedestrians must ensure vehicles have stopped before crossing.
Four RRFBs are now in operation and the two remaining crosswalks will be completed by the end of March. Please plan for single lane alternating traffic and expect delays during construction. Thank you in advance for your patience.
