Green Infrastructure & Natural Asset Evaluation


Members

: Local landscapers, urban design planners, environmental and landscape management professionals, urban foresters, and local environmental interest group members. 

Goals

: Educate City staff and residents about the value of green infrastructure & maintaining natural assets; present a speaker series on relevant topics; host public consultations about the value of green infrastructure & specific natural assets in their neighbourhood; learn about best practices from other municipalities; support research work being done by BCIT and UBC students (grants); explore potential scoping report for a municipal green infrastructure & natural asset management strategy.

Ecological Network Wildlife Management Strategy

Goals

: Help develop & promote a bio-diversity, connectivity and wildlife habitat management strategy for the municipality, including consideration for species at risk, significant ecosystems and unique or threatened flora/fauna; educate the community about issues, responsibilities & stewardship opportunities associated with the management of wildlife interface areas; continue to promote ongoing initiatives that can help us continue to consider overall bio-regional and local watershed health.

Climate Change Adaptation & Resiliency

Goals

: Explore, create messaging and raise awareness about climate change impacts; promote ways to offset effects through urban design & ecological management; link economic vitality, mental and physical health/well being and connectivity for residents to urban green spaces; develop strategies that move Maple Ridge towards municipal climate change performance targets (eg. air quality improvements, carbon sequestration and green house gas offsets); planning and mitigation efforts towards integrated water and energy conservation management targets; support stakeholders around our community on integrated sustainable management plans for a healthy environment and shared natural resources.

Vulnerable Aquifer & Groundwater Management Mapping


Members

: Local watershed interest group members, residents who rely on groundwater. 

Goals

: Educate City staff and residents on location, extent and sensitivity of Provincially-designated vulnerable aquifers in Maple Ridge; raise awareness of our reliance on groundwater in certain areas and of potential threats to aquifer health; update aquifer mapping on the OCP; review and provide feedback on draft development permit wording relating to aquifer areas.

Environmental Communications Management Strategy


Members

: Local communications professionals and event organizers. 

Goals

: Support the work of the EAC and other subcommittees: determine pathways to promote information from the EAC and subcommittees to the public via City of Maple Ridge; create draft posts on relevant issues and topics for the City of Maple Ridge to promote; assist the EAC and subcommittees in event-planning logistics and promotion.

Watercourse Protection Bylaw Review


Members

: Environmental professionals, local watershed stewardship group members, landowners and farmers. 

Goals

: Review, provide feedback on and suggest potential changes to the existing Watercourse Protection Bylaw – including rewriting bylaw in public-friendly language; exploring and suggesting enforcement tools to help with habitat violations; also help to create a more consistent, cost effective and efficient bylaw review process.
