Public Education 

The Maple Ridge / Pitt Meadows ESS Public Education Committee educates and assists residents and businesses to be better prepared for an emergency or disaster, such as floods, fires or earthquakes.

The ESS Public Education Committee volunteers deliver emergency preparedness presentations to neighbourhood groups, service organizations, churches, school groups, as well as attend community special events. The committee will also identify and develop training opportunities for fellow ESS volunteers.

Responsibilities


  • Be an advocate for emergency preparedness
  • Pick up presentation supplies and equipment from Emergency Support Services Office
  • Deliver the City of Maple Ridge’s personal preparedness presentation
  • Answer questions from the audience/attendees
  • Collect names of those interested in becoming a volunteer and those who have questions or comments that require further follow-up
  • Set up, staff and take down the display booth at special events

Skills & Abilities


  • Excellent verbal communication and public speaking skills
  • Knowledge of the City’s Emergency Support Services Program and related topics
  • Ability to handle questions and challenges from audiences
  • Enjoy working as part of a team

Training Required


  • Introduction to ESS
  • Introduction to Reception Centres
  • Related training in customer service

Commitment


  • Available to do approximately 4-6 presentations or events per year
  • Participation in training courses provided by Emergency Support Services Programs

Tips for Volunteers

You may feel your family's and friends' problems are trivial compared to those of the victims you just left, and their complaints may make you angry. Try to remember they don’t share your experience and that their problems are important to them.
