Housing Needs Report

Housing Needs Report Update

The City is updating the Housing Needs Report to better understand the current and future housing needs in Maple Ridge. It will be used as a foundation for planning and decision making for the next five years.

Open House

As part of the process, the City hosted an open house on March 7, 2024 at the Maple Ridge Library to provide an opportunity for the project team to share preliminary findings, dive deeper into regional housing needs, and answer questions.

Survey

A community survey was conducted and closed on March 21, 2024. The survey provided the public with an opportunity to give feedback on preliminary findings and input into the report update. Thank you to those who participated in the survey.

Stakeholder Engagement Presentations

Three stakeholder engagement sessions were held in February 2024 with the development and non-profit community. A copy of the materials presented at these sessions can be found here

Council Workshop Presentation

The City consultant for this project presented interim Housing Needs Results to Council at the February 27, 2024 Council Workshop. A copy of the materials presented is available here. The video recording of the presentation can be viewed here

What is a Housing Needs Report?

The primary purpose of this process is to identify and describe the key needs and gaps in Maple Ridge’s housing system to inform future policymaking. A Housing Needs Report is intended to strengthen the ability of local governments to understand what kinds of housing are most needed in their communities, and help inform local plans, policies, and development decisions. The assessment process and report itself will not result in specific new policy but will be used to support and inform future changes (to Official Community Plans, Housing Action Plans, Zoning Bylaws, and others).

As of 2019, every local government in BC is legislatively required to undertake a housing needs assessment by April 2022, and every five years thereafter. You can find detailed information about this legislation and the report requirements on the provincial government’s
website.

Previous Work

The City of Maple Ridge completed a housing needs assessment in 2021. This assessment process took place over four months, with a final presentation to Council.

This final Housing Needs Report was presented at the Council Workshop on February 9, 2021. The report can be found here (Item 4.2) and the conversation with Council was recorded and is available here.
