[ARCHIVED] Nov. 28, 1:00 pm Update: Road and Weather Update

road and weather_spotlight

Environment Canada will be maintaining the Rainfall Warning for the region. Rainfall amounts will drop over the afternoon and moderate for the next 24 hours. On Monday Environment Canada will release an updated forecast for the next wave of the ‘atmospheric river’ that will come through the region on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Locally, our crews have closed 132 Avenue from just east of 116 Street through to 232 Street. We have personnel at the barricades to restrict traffic to residents only. In addition, 224 Street is closed from 132 Avenue north to 144 Avenue. Residents of Silver Valley are asked to use 232 Street to access or egress from your neighbourhood. As the rainfall eases we expect to see the water levels drop. Please avoid the area no matter what type of vehicle you drive.

Drive BC is the best source of information for regional road conditions. The website is drivebc.ca. You can also follow them on Twitter. The Lougheed Highway remains closed between 240 Street and 272 Street. Highways crews are on site evaluating the roadway. You can detour via Dewdney Trunk Road, however please reconsider any non-essential travel today as this wave of the storm continues in the eastern Fraser Valley.

BC Hydro has been doing a controlled release over the last few days in anticipation of the multiple pulses of rainfall in the forecast. Water levels remain below the levels from the November 15 event and are expected to peak this afternoon as this wave of the storm moves through the Fraser Valley.

Sandbags have been staged at two locations in the City. Sand and sandbags can be accessed at the 232 Street parking lot at Maple Ridge Park adjacent to the South Alouette Bridge. You can also access sand and sandbags at the parking lot of the Hammond outdoor pool.

Operations crews will continue to patrol the community throughout the day as the storm impacts reduce. The Operation Centre can be reached at 604-463-9581 to report any problems.

An update will be provided on Monday with the latest forecast from Environment Canada for the next wave of this weather event. Thank you for sharing these messages with your neighbours and for your cooperation at road closure barricades. Stay safe.
