[ARCHIVED] January 10 Weather Warning

220110 weather update

Weather Update: Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather statement. Another ‘atmospheric river’ of rainfall is forecast to arrive in the region starting overnight and continuing until Thursday morning. The forecast calls for 50 to 75 mm of rain on both Tuesday and Wednesday. Along with the arrival of the rain is an increase in the temperatures and the freezing level rising, which could result in snow on the local mountains melting and adding to the water in local rivers and streams. The BC River forecast Centre has issued a High Streamflow Advisory.

The combination of low elevation snowpack, warming temperatures and heavy rainfall will result in rapid rises for creeks and rivers, especially at low and mid‐elevation watersheds on the coast. Rivers are expected to begin increasing on Tuesday and likely peak Wednesday or Thursday. Citizens are asked to stay away from local watercourses during the snow event.

In urban areas, citizens are asked to clear any snow or debris from catch basins, or storm drains, around your home and make sure that your eaves and downspouts are clear and draining water away from your home. Make sure that you clear any drains around your home and ensure that sump pumps are operating normally.

BC Hydro has drawn down the level of the Alouette Lake Reservoir in anticipation of the forecasted rain event. The City will continue to work with BC Hydro to communicate any change in the reservoir flows into the South Alouette. The forecast level of rain may result in some localized flooding.

City crews have dropped off sand and sandbags at the south parking lot of Maple Ridge Park adjacent to 232 Street as a precaution for homeowners who are concerned about potential flood impacts in the Alouette watershed. People will need to bring their own shovels to access the sand and sandbags. City staff will be monitoring local stream levels throughout the upcoming rain event and providing updates as required. In addition, our crews will be monitoring catch basins in the urban areas. If you see examples of ponding water on our streets please call the operation centre at 604-463-9581.

Please note that the rainfall negates the ability of the City to be able to brine or salt roads in the transition from the cold temperatures to the rain event. During this upcoming storm we urge people to drive with caution and for pedestrians to wear bright reflective clothing for maximum visibility. Let’s all stay safe and be prepared for this storm.
