On Thursday, March 26 the City of Maple Ridge in cooperation with the Canadian Red Cross began the transition from meeting the immediate needs of those affected by the fire at Sunrise Apartment building to long term recovery.
Some good news was shared as many of the residents have found new places to live, while others remain living with family or friends until they are able to find a new home. There are 9 families or individuals moving into a new home on April 1 requiring continued support with Emergency Support Services to meet basic needs.
At this time there is no clear indication of when and which residents will gain access to retrieve personal items. As the safety of residents and restoration workers is paramount, tests must first be conducted for hazardous materials and air quality to determine when the building is safe to enter. This process is ongoing and is being conducted as quickly and as safely as possible to affect repairs and provide access for personal belongings.
The Canadian Red Cross has conducted a needs assessment of individual cases and will work to match offers for donations from the community and support from partner agencies with needs of the residents. The Canadian Red Cross can be contacted at 604-848-4384.
