Research from LOCO BC (the BC-based non-profit behind the BC Buy Local initiative) shows that local businesses in British Columbia generate more than double the economic impact of their chain competitors, and the multiplier is even greater when compared to online giants.

Local businesses:

Create 4 out of every 10 jobs in BC
Make 31% of their purchases from other BC businesses
Keep 63% of revenue in BC, compared to 14% for multinationals
Create 8 times more jobs and revenue per square foot than multinationals
Give 24 times more per dollar of revenue to local causes than multinationals
Make up 98% of all businesses in BC and produce 34% of provincial GDP
Create 4.6 times the economic impact with each dollar earned

We use the definition of ‘local’ that was developed by LOCO BC through research on economic and other business impacts.

Local Owned businesses are:

Private companies (e.g. single owner or partnership, employee-owned, co-operative, or social enterprise/non-profit)
Headquartered in BC
> 50% of owners residing in BC

Local Grown products are:

Agricultural products grown in BC (e.g. food, plants, fibre, wood)
Manufactured products with >50% materials grown in BC

Local Made* products are:

Wholly or largely (>50%) manufactured or processed in BC

* Can include products produced without local materials or ingredients. Local made products with local ingredients or materials can add ‘Local Grown’ if applicable.

It's easy to Choose Maple Ridge!

Whether you're looking to shop, dine, indulge, or explore, take a moment to find a Maple Ridge business that offers the product, service, or experience you're looking for. You might even find something that's completely unexpected or new to you.

If a local business doesn't have a certain item in stock, they can often order it for you, or they might know another local business who carries it. You just need to ask! While it may take a little bit longer, the wait will be worth it. More of the money you spend will stay closer to home and make a bigger difference to that local business (and the community) than to a multinational online giant.

How to shift $150 of monthly spending

We're creatures of habit, so it can take a bit of time and effort to change a behaviour, but the rewards can be worth it in the long run. Shifting your spending can seem like a difficult task, but it's often easier than you might think and could even save you money.

For example, let's say you purchase a caffe latte four times each week, and you treat yourself to a cookie or muffin on two of those occasions.

In this example, you still get to enjoy your coffee and treat as usual, but you'll be supporting a local business run by a neighbour, friend, or family member. And you save a few dollars while doing so.

How about the remaining $45 for the month? Well, if you order two pizzas during the month, you've now shifted more than $150 of your monthly spending. That's definitely something to feel good about!
