Local government elections in B.C. are held every four years on the third Saturday in October. Our next general local election will be held on October 17, 2026.
Assent Vote (Referendum): Recreation Project Funding
Maple Ridge is moving forward with plans for three major recreation projects to meet the needs of our growing community. An assent vote (referendum) on borrowing funds for the projects will be held as part of the October 17 local government election.

Municipal Elections
Municipal elections are the most direct way for the public to influence their local government, school district or other local governance body by determining the individuals who then make decisions and govern on their behalf following general voting day.
In Maple Ridge, the following positions are elected:
- One Mayor
- Six Councillors
- Five School Trustees (for School District No. 42)

Assent Vote on Borrowing for Recreation Projects
Voter assent is required for long-term borrowing for major projects. As part of the October 17 municipal election Maple Ridge voters will be asked to vote on whether they want the City to borrow funds for each of the three proposed Recreation Ready projects: the Hammond Aquatics and Recreation Centre, the Multi-Use Community Park in Hammond and the Albion Twin-Rink Arena Expansion.

- Are you in favour of the City of Maple Ridge adopting the Hammond Aquatics and Recreation Centre Loan Authorization Bylaw No. 8123-2026 to authorize borrowing up to $227,000,000 for a term up to 25 years to construct an aquatic recreation centre at the properties located at 11509 207 Street, 20601 Westfield Avenue and an unaddressed property (PID: 013-715-984)?
- Are you in favour of the City of Maple Ridge adopting the Hammond Multi-Use Community Park Loan Authorization Bylaw No. 8124-2026 to authorize borrowing up to $23,000,000 for a term up to 25 years to construct a multi-use community park at the property located at 20818 Golf Lane?
- Are you in favour of the City of Maple Ridge adopting the Albion Twin-Rink Arenas Expansion Loan Authorization Bylaw No. 8122-2026 to authorize borrowing up to $143,000,000 for a term up to 25 years to construct a twin-rink arena expansion at the property located at 23588 Jim Robson Way?
Why Your Vote Matters
A Yes vote means you support the City borrowing up to the maximum amount listed for that project, for a term of up to 25 years, while the City continues to seek grants, sponsorships, partnerships, and other funding sources to reduce the final amount borrowed. A question passes if more than 50% of valid votes cast are Yes.
If an assent vote passes, the new Council will consider adopting the applicable borrowing bylaw. If adopted, the project would then move into detailed design, with more public engagement before construction begins.
If an assent vote does not pass, the borrowing for that project will not take place and next steps would be reviewed by staff for Council’s consideration.
